Stacy Floyd - ELA

Hello My Name Is...

Stacy Floyd

.

Course Description: Eighth-grade Language Arts is a class that combines language, literature, writing and speaking. It focuses on the expansion of each student’s oral and written communication skills as the development of their reading skills. The literature expands on the connection between the reader and writer, helping students understand the relationships that shape their literature and their lives.

The written emphasis is on the growth of each student’s ability to revise his or her own work and to recognize the quality of that work. To aid in that development, students will study and utilize the Six-Writing Traits.

Units: Although students will be writing on many topics throughout the year, there will be several major units that will include reading, writing, vocabulary and oral presentations:

Unit 1: Everyone Loves a Mystery
Unit 2: Past and Present
Unit 3: No Risk, No Reward
Unit 4: Hear Me Out
Unit 5: Trying Times
Unit 6: Beyond Reality
State Assessment Prep

Weekly Activities: We will work on the following assignments throughout each week.
Grammar
Journal Writing

Reading is an important aspect of learning in 8th grade. I would like to see them read for at least 10-20 minutes every night. Students will also be assigned several books, with a variety of genres, throughout the year: The Outsiders and the Holocaust/Diary of Anne Frank are a few. They will also be completing projects that tie into each assigned novel.

Please encourage your student to check Skyward and Google Classroom if he or she has questions about an assignment.
